Pha-Pa-Khaya-Recycle (Recyclable Waste Donation Program)

     
 

Concept

 

Recyclable Waste Donation Program is a religion-based activity, help reducing waste problem. Buddhists who recognize the value of recyclable wastes will donate their wastes to the temple or the project organizer. The income received from waste selling will use as a fund for many charity projects such as education for poor children, etc.

The reuse/recycle approach was started since the Buddha Era. The Lord Buddha made his garment from the cloth which Indian people used for corpse covering and threw it away in the forest after using. He washed the cloth, boiled it and dyed it with natural color got from tree husk. Furthermore, He taught his apostles to reuse their garment after it worn out as small mattress for sitting on or use it as hands/feet towel or as a rag. And after the rag is totally worn out until it can not be used anymore, He advised mixing it with mud for holes refill to prevent rain from penetrating into the residence.

Principle and Rationale

 

Recyclable Waste Donation Program was initiated in Thailand by Mr. Somthai Wongcharoen, president of Wongpanit Garbage Recycle Separation Plant, on October 27, 2000 at Wangmasra Temple, T. Thachang, A. Phromphiram, Phitsanulok and was expanded to a bigger activity at Sirikrit Convention Hall, Bangkok on World Environmental Day during June 5-10, 2001. The program has been expanding continually to other provinces. Many people from diverse organizations such as the sub-district administration office, the provincial administration office, municipality, shops, department stores, schools, hospitals, industrial factories, governmental sectors and ministries pay attention to participate the program with strong faith

The Ultimate Goal beyond the Project Perspective

 

Be able to minimize waste quantity in the project area at least 50%

 

Main Objectives

 

1. To reduce quantity of waste and waste problem by sorting the recyclable waste
2. To activate peoples awareness in environmental preservation and create unity in communities
3. To coordinate cooperation among public and private sector including community and religion organization to bring about
a participation in planning and solving waste problem together (an integrated waste management approach)
4. To create faith in merit making and community power to cause the waste to reborn again by recycling
5. To raise funds for charity projects such as scholarship for poor students, elder people fund, fund for environmental
preservation in community and religious activities fund

Target Groups

 

1. Primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities
2. Communities, households, retailers, distributors, department stores, and offices
3. Hotels, hospitals, industrial factories
4. Government sectors and religion organizations

Operation Process

 

1. Project plan
2. Committee meeting
3. Scheduling and place identify
4. News announcement including invitation cards
5. Implementation as planning
6. Implementation conclusion

 

Project Activities Characteristics

 

1. Post six of 4x8 feet signboards, publicizing the event at every major corner.
2. Distribution of leaflets
3. Hand out 10,000 invitation cards to the target groups
4. Assign a person to responsible for project monitoring and periodic evaluation
5. Identify places to arrange the activity; 40 in communities and 11 at municipal schools, prepare PR equipment in the form
of a yellow bucket with tree branch, new monk clothing set, some recyclable waste hanging on the branch of the tree and
recyclable waste packed in bags and beautifully tires with rope or bows for decorating around the area.
6. On the scheduled date, every community and school participating the program to set a parade, carry the donated material
to the city hall or other appropriate place for ceremony
7. Ceremony
7.1 The Mayor speaks on the activity objectives and brief history
7.2 The Governors opening speech
7.3 The liaison prays for offering the donations
7.4 The monks prays to receive the donations
7.5 The monk delivers a sermon on Pha Pa Samakkee concept and recycling. The ceremony completed.
7.6 The municipal recycling centre takes the waste to separation and price assessment
7.7 The project committee receives the income and submits it to each objective project
8. At night arrange the recycling concert and recycling li-ke for celebration
8.1 The recycling concert is a concert to draw the interest of the teenagers and young generations to recycling
awareness and educate them on environmental management
8.2 The recycling li-ke is a Thai traditional performance to attack the interest of the middle ages and old ages to
recycling awareness.

 

Sponsor Budget

 

Beside the road of major places, at the Pha-Pa activity area, concert and li-ke area install signboards of the sponsors such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Singha, Heineken, department stores and shops. Use large signboard for the big sponsors.

 

 

The Expectations

1. Waste quantity and problem reduced
2. People are aware of environmental conservation
3. Ensure the integrated cooperation among public and private sector including community and religion organization in
waste problem solving.
4. Gain faith in religious merit making as well as an innovation of waste management
5. Gain income from turning waste to strategy that enables to raise fund for students, elder people and community
environmental activities by not rely merely on the governmental budget, according to the self-reliance principle-another
